Its the dark, dry sense of humour that keeps us all going.
I dont do it anymore, got fed up of two hours broken sleep and full days work afterwards. Then there was the visiting relatives (especially after motorcycle ones)
Just got too much for me after 25 years.....so no more!!

moved over to service manager job....left recovery to bodyshop & youngsters who still thought it was fun.
I found the "buzz" at the time was great....but then the thought of what you've been involved with...."there but for the grace of god " etc....just got too much.
Like the kids who lost right legs & arms by a car cutting a corner
the artic full of coal who lost brakes going down into town...wiped out a butchers shop, mother and kid...no insurance/mot/tax/license!!!
the 20 tonner that lost brakes going down into a small town just when kids were going to school...sent cars through shop windows because they had nowhere to escape...
the motorcyclist who fell off and met an Austin Maxi coming uphill...no damage at all to the bike...but he was scraped up off the floor.

No dont miss it now, but techniques still come in handy to recover the odd Smurfer from mud

on the m25 a few years ago, we were following some people to a meet, and i was near the back in a 1.0 micra with the company logo over it for a bit of advertising. my friend was behind me
i dont know what happened that made the pug 205 in the left hand lane decide to undertake my mate behind, cut in between me and him and then overtake me.
i said to my passenger look at this idiot!
when he got level with the car in front he swerved towards them and then swerved back. i think he done this to scare him for some reason.
but upon swerving he made the back end of the little 205 start to fish tail and he could never regain control. being only 18 at the time i didnt think ahead too quick, and i watch him bounce off the armcoe and then the car in front a good few times causing the escort in front of me to do 360 spins. as soon as i was convered in glass i was on the brake. was trying to slow down as quickly as poss so i didnt then smash into the escort which was still in the middle lane. i looked in my rear view and my mate was about to crash into me. but i was able to take my foot off the brake just enough. i can still remember the look on his face - he only had the car a week.

once we pulled over i ran over to the escort and both people were ok but really shocked. he was about to lay me a punch because he thought i was the one that smashed into him. took us a little while to work out where the 205 had gone to. when we heard screams from the field we ran over. i dont know how many times the 205 had rollen over, but as i ran over the male driver was climbing out the back door. his daughter i assume had been thrown from the car as she was laying down in the grass, and her mum was trying to phone for help. the girl died later that night

In my old job I would have to go and deal with the wreaks after they were recovered . Sometimes the notes on paperwork would indicate a fatal so you knew not to contact family about settleing value etc . I would go into recovery yards and ask to inspect the vehicle and be told "It's the one over there with the tarp on with the flies buzzing round it ."
A body or 2 of blood in a motor dont look good . Seen some poor soda brains on the remains of a BMW headrest were a joist went through rear screen and killed him . Very little damage to vehicle and was repairable , his family did not want it back .
