A simple no sorry mate it can't be done would have sufficed. Hopefully a sensible answer will be along shortly.

now now i was only kiddin,im sure there is a way of doin it

yes there is a way of doing it.work out how much wattage you have?go to maplins and get a variable resistor that can take the amount of wattage.a simple volume control is a variable resistor.

i guessed! sure it can be done with resistors?thinkin bout it,ot kiddin, but house hold low voltage down lighters use a power pack that can be dimmed?

Its a matter of current. Given that your roof lights (if you've got 4 x 55w) will draw something like 16A. You'll need a variable resistor (or rheostat) capable of dealing with that.

Its gonna be big, and its gonna give off lots of heat.

It can be done electronically, probably with an RC plane motor controller, which wouldn't be liable to warming your car so much as it would just pulse the lights on very very quickly for different lengths of time, giving the impression of dimmer lights. You'd need a pulse width modulation source to feed it with...

On the whole, not worth the effort. Fit small LEDs in them, thats what I did with mine (now GWHs)

I did suggest a variable resistor in my first reply.......

Small LED's. Brilliant! That's the way I'm going to go then. A damn sight cheaper then my brass dimmer switch option. (Yes, I now find that funny after I've chilled with a couple of Southern Comforts).

Will try not to post again while I'm Mr. Grumpy!

                    Thanks Andy.

if you tell me the total wattage of the lights you want to dim i will send you a circuit that will do it, it will be an electronic circuit that will have to be made up , or i will try and give you a commercial manufacturer that will do the job.

It will be a PWM effectively (variable duty ratio square wave) , switching a mosfet or large power transistor. You're right, it can be done, but really, its not worth the effort, and getting one made up commercially will cost him an arm and a leg! Prototyping costs a bomb, which is why I used to do ours in house when I worked for MOD.
