  • In the garage tomorrow......

    Afternoon all

My Surfs going into a local garage tomorrow to check out a suspected knackered wheel bearing and to repair the fuel gauge.

They're going to have a look over it and see if there are any other problems with it. Is there anything I should ask that they shouldn't touch, ie something that someone inexperienced in surfs might do more harm than good to?

Also, how frequently should the oil and filters be changed, I'm going to ask them to check the transmission fluid and coolant, anything else I should ask them to have a quick nose at?

I really just need to make sure its Ok for the next 4-5,000 miles and then I'm going to take it to one of the specialists mentioned on here for a full service in the Spring.

    Cheers

any extra work to be done get a second opinion. Oil 5000 miles transmission fluid tested with engine running after shiftin gears, diff oil might be worth doin, coolant change important but it has to be burped properly or innevitable will happen

Bearing may be able to be tightened suggest that before replacement. Cheaper

Thats free ticket to charge you lots off cash if you're not careful, make sure everything extra is passed by you first!

Thats just going to get their backs up, I wouldn't mention it. They won't do much anyway!

Offically, engine oil change every 3000 miles, Filter every 6000. IMHO, unless you do stupid amounts of towing and heavy driving, changing the oil and filter every 5000 miles is fine.

            Thanks guys, top stuff

I did do a search on "oil change" but just got loads of thread about veggie oil..............

As far as the garage goes, its a bit of a unique situation. They've done some work before on my Audi and they do a good job but I think they're very expensive. However, my boss is going to put this through the company books so I won't have to pay for it, being the all round top bloke that he is
So, its a great opportunity to polish off any bits that need doing as cash is tight with Xmas approaching and to get it through to better (hopefully) financial times in the Spring
But, by the same token, I don't want to take liberties with his generosity.
So, if I ask them to just change the oil and filters, and the transmission fluid if needed that seems the safest bet as it was serviced in August, I just don't know how many miles its done since then.
Then, I can read up on "burping" the system and change the coolant myself over the weekend.

I wanna be doing most of the servicing myself eventually, its just really busy at work at the moment and with the short days its akward without having a garage to work in.

edit: where abouts in kent are ya btw?
I'm in Sittingbourne and work in East Malling.

Bearing may be able to be tightened suggest that before replacement. Cheaper
Cool, thanks for that. I'll tell them it has a bearing that needs tightening and see what comes of it

Thanks for the great help, as always guys

            Cheers
