Hi Rod, My wife bought me an hour lessen a few years ago, it was great. We took off at some airfield in essex and followed the m25 down to the qe2 bridge over the thames then back. Took control for a few minutes then handed back to him to land. Make sure your dad takes a video cam up with him. I got some great footage.

I told my auntie earlier an she said he will love it!

Its for two people so im gunna send my mum with him!

She can do the camera thing provided shes not too much of a nervous mess!

snap that's what I've been up to, spending hours in front of the lathe only prob is no one appreciates how much effort you put in

I find the biggest problem is finding the wood I have found Lot's of spalted logs on the beach around here.

Nowadays I love being able to put the gouge onto the work piece and get that satisfying sharp cutting noise, lots of crisp shavings and an almost finished piece.

It was different when I first started 19 years ago. I remember bits of wood flying through the air smashing the strip lights and getting showered in glass; having the gouge hurled through the open shed door like an Exocet missile, trying to get a smooth finish and being sprayed with french Shellac polish, friction burns after trying to sand the thing to death when I couldn't be bothered trying to reclaim my gouge which was now lying outside on the drive.

I remember making the piece fit the lathe only to have it part company at warp factor 10 and cuff my lug hole on the way past, The joy of using piano wire to make burn rings only to forget the wire was hot and have a branded line on mt hand for the next 2 weeks.

Oh and there's the getting the wood in the first place the time the axe slipped from my grasp and parted my shoe laces before splitting the shoe leather and embedding itself finally in the foot just between the bones.

They really have no idea the work that goes into the art of wood-turning.

being a carpenter/joiner i know how you feel , i just bought my wife a smart car for her to learn to drive in as she has always wanted one ,she has had a hard year having to have chemotherapy most of it so thought she should have something special , and she took to driving it like a duck to water, but then again she has been riding a speed fight for years so she has a lot of road sense.

mrs gwh and meself got married on about 90 quid ,10 years ago.
since then we have built up our business and today it trades well.
so she asked for a new wedding ring, as the very cheap one she had was just about worn away.isaid we cant afford it,but have secretly got it
and a chain and charm bracelet and charms etc.does look as if i may have to wear socks with holes in them for the next year because of em ,but well worth it.

I hope your wife is recovering mate - that's one hell of a thing to be put through - seen it happen to my aunt and a close friend recently.....
