I'd just add that they do need locking in at night to prevent foxes, weasels, stoats, pine marten, badgers, mink and otters getting at them..... and yes we have them all!

If you're at work when this needs doing in the winter they are vulnerable. I ended up getting an automatic closer that works on daylight. Works a treat. I did end up adding a timer clock to it as I found foxey loxey was doing a 5am visit in the summer. Hence mine shuts at dusk and reopens at 8am at the mom but I set that to 7'ish in the summer.

All foxes etc go for the easy feed, so make it hard for them. Electric fencing is the best way as Linda says.

ps I have black rocks, solid layers and hardy to the wind and wet of west Scotland.

Chees for all the info Linda, would love to save the Battery hens - saw them take some in on Jimmys farm, was horrified - they had hardly any feathers and just stood in the garden lookin like they came straight out of a concentration camp (which I spose they did) and it was all legal. $$$$$$ cruel if you ask me. I will deff give you a shout in the new year about the best time to get some and where from etc. Have loads of spare electic fence from the field. Never thought of that.

Trouble is they often come with AI

Bibs - you can get away with the horsey leccy - if you use the string and have enough rows of it, otherwise you can buy special poultry netting leccy fence which is like squares of lectric.

we also have the automatic pop hole opener to open & close the door - we got the one with the light sensor, but my silly hens don't go to bed early enough and kept getting shut out so now we have a timer too.

ETA - I left th back door open today and ended up with chickens in the kitchen and bathroom!!!

Bibs - there is a book called Choosing and Keeping chickens by Chris Graham - costs about £5 and is great for all the basics
