Turbo Or Sensor ??

i read through some of the threads last night about surfs that were slow on hills. i have same problem with my surf , it goes fine on flat and down hill but when i come to a hill she wont have it at all. no green turbo light coming on on dash when i drive but comes on as it should first turn on ignition then goes off . done ecu reset i had a 4 flash code .....coolant temp sensor........after reset no difference. took it to an import specialist and he went straight for turbo replacement( .. big money..) but most owners on here seem to say turbo sensor near air filter housing. i am in sheffield and wondered if there is anywhere local to me where i can buy turbo sensor or does anyone have one for sale off a surf that they are breaking???? many thanks in advance.... bob

Im guessing 2.4. He mentions green turbo light coming on with ignition, the 3.0 l doesnt have a green turbo light

An obvious thing to check

check the pipe hasn't come off or broken.

the turbo sensor is on the n/s wing just at the side of the air filter. there should be 1 multiplug with 2 wires coming from it (and a pipe obvously). You should be able to hear the turbo whistle as it spins up as well.

I have to say that the missus's 2.4 is not a sparkling performer on hills and smokes a bit as well but I'm sure mine's a differant problem (which I havent fixed yet!)

Don't believe the "expert" until you check the simple things. The hose from manifold to turbo sensor may have come off. Coolant sensor code means the sensor in the block above the starter. It may even be a simple as a loose connector. Turbo sensor can be tested by applying a certain pressure. I will see if I can find the info on this.

They would, check the coolant sensor first, its what the truck wants checked. The ECU won't let you use full power till there is some heat in the coolant to save damage on a cold engine. If it thinks the engine is stone cold this could be your problem.

the temp guage in the car is working so i thought the coolant sensor was connected properly. checked all hoses in, on and around turbo sensor and all are connected and none split . can hear turbo whistle when i am driving but just not getting any boost when going uphill

Like I said in a previous thread, if the turbo spins freely and true its hard for it to not make pressure, and the cause is something else.

The coolant sensor has nothing to do with the temperature gauge. It's the one in the block above the starter as I stated before. It is a sensor for the ECU.

I can't find the proper specs or test for the sensor but you could try this. Check the sensor by removing the hose from the small white filter and make sure it's still connected to the sensor. Apply a pressure of around 5PSI via the hose to the sensor while the engine is running. If the light comes on the sensor should be ok if not then you have a problem with the sensor, wiring or even the ECU. Try swapping with a known good pressure sensor is another thing you could try.

Tony, would a fault like this keep causing an error on the ECU or will the ecu just assume the engine's cold all the time?

Yes

Yes, the coolant sensor works in conjunction with other sensors to adjust fueling.

The ECU is telling you to fix the Coolant Sensor and will continue to do so.
