dont want to hijack your thread will,but,

neil, i have got this "winch frame" arriving this week.it bolts onto the front of the chassis rails in several places.is there any chance you could post up some pics of how yours is bolted on?
its just that you could almost certainly (with a bit of minor fabrication on top) get awinch mount on a surf for what appears to be about 150 quid!!
which is a damm site less than a winch bumper
