This so describes my recent conversations with OH
    http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk.../search.action
go have a look at as many of these as you can, drive all the ones you look at whether you like them or not and you'll get a feel for what they should be like. Ask on here if there's someone local with a known good one that'll let you have a drive or if someone who knows alot about them will come and look at some with you. Most of us are pretty friendly and helpful, honest.

edit:the link changes back to my postcode when i click on it, if necessary change the postcode back to your one an set the distance to find localish cars.

I run a 3rd Gen, covered about 100,000 miles in a little over 3 years. Cooked the engine once after I filled the radiator with mud and then went tanking down the motorway - other than that no problems what so ever.
Tyres have lasted well over 50,000 miles (BF Goodrich at about £100 per corner).
Fuel, I get about 28 MPG doing a 70 mile commute each day.
Space - 5 adults + canoeing gear for a weekend + 1000 miles no problems and pleanty of room for all.

Need any more arguments to help you win over OH?
            Welcome to the forum.

Okay I think I'm winning this one.

However, I'm on my own, I have to take responsibility for the surf

I've looked at autotrader, the one I was going to start with has been sold.

There are several for sale on this site that fit your requirements, you could organise to see and test drive some of those, and at least you can check the history on them all.

Maybe arrange to meet a few of them in one place local to everyone on a saturday?

I'm not sure where Newbury is exactly, but I don't think it's down south, which is handy coz most of the for sale surfs seem to be midlands or north.

                Check the for sale section.

Unfortunately it is down south. About 15 minutes west on the M4 from Reading to be precise.

Well that's a good place to start, you're only a couple of hours from the midlands, and two hours east or west gives you a big area to find members surfs, and I'm sure some/most would be happy to meet you half way if they can sell their beloved to another member

I shall bear that in mind.

I need to contact Linda and see if she wouldn't mind helping me. Afterall, it was her that started all this...

You could make a weekend trip of it. Durham's a nice place to visit and you could do your Chrismas shopping at the Metro Centre.

I drove 300 miles to Wales for two days offroading and camping, so a trip to Durham ain't out of the question for a shopping trip.
