brake fluid leak!

just been out to the surf and its got fluid leaking everywhere from the drivers side rear wheel. any likely culprits incase I need to order some parts and fix tomorrow?
I havent got time to look today im out in a mo.

i saw some oil that had flicked off the wheel yesterday but put it down to driving through something, at least it didnt all leak out while driving (although I did notice the brakes getting worse last night )

could be a split brake hose(mate, get some braided ones,they are superb)
possible connection

maybe a caliper piston seal has gone.all parts are available from roughtrax

just clean off and start up and pump the brakes a couple of times.you should be able to see where its coming from.may be an idea to change the fluid whilst you are at it

sounds like it could be the seals for the rear wheel bearing, which would allow diff oil to leak. I guess it could be brake fluid leaking somewhere. Diff oil stinks if that helps identify it.

it looks like its coming from within the drum so I guess ill get a new cylinder. I flushed the fluid less than a year ago but while its mostly all over the road now I guess Ill do it again.
I was just thinking about braided hoses - why is the kit only 3 piece from Roughtrax... anyone know?

When I had fluid on my rear wheels it was the shocks leaking, but I presume you mean a leak that is clearly not a shock.

I have fitted a few braded hose kits over the years. Sometimes they throw out some of the cumbersome bits and make things much neater and simplified.

Like putting 2 bango fittings together with a long connecting hollow stud instead of big 3 way connectors and rubber hoses.

Haven't seen the Surf ones but that's probably why.

there is a bearing kit on Roughtrax that says diff oil leaking into rear hub is a common fault i think ill order that instead of the brakes stuff

that would account for the brakes getting worse.you may want to replace the rear shoes if they are contaminated with oil.as nero said the rear bearing oil seal will allow oil past,seems though a strip down and investigation is in order(and dont forget to top up the diff oil)

yeah thats what I think. bummer if the shoes do need doing they only been on a few months. can I just clean them and put them back?

seal kit ,new shoes (both sets) and some diffoil

You might get away with some brake cleaner but if they are wet change them the oil causes them to detatch from the steel as well as reduce the braking efficiency.

and the three piece brake hose set is right.two shorter ones for the front and the longer one for above the rear axle.the brake lines are stell fro the top of the axle to the brake drums

ok ive ordered new shoes and bearing kit so ill see what I find tomorrow!
