Can you find a US number you can call him on ?

If so get an account with www.voipcheap.co.uk and get cheap or free calls to the US, and then you can call him.

JJ, how is paying out an extra three quid saving you money?????

p.s. He's your son, cost shouldn't matter to stay in touch!

                      (within reason)

I spent a month working in Canada some years ago, and it turned out the cheapest way was to buy PAYG phones and cheap calling cards out there.

Yes you can. Most gas stations stocked them.
