Is it legal to wind back the clock?

Hi,

quick question.

if a car is imported with, say, 149000 kms on the clock, and then when they put the converter mechanism on, they wind the clock back to show 93125 as the equivalent miles. Is this legal or not?

Im pretty sure its illegal to tamper with them full stop! Just tell the next owner its in KMs

It's not illegal to alter the mileage, it's illegal to then claim it's a genuine mileage after it's been altered. If the mileages and stuff don't tie up with the MOTs etc then you may find it causes problems when selling. If you can document it fully as to why it's been wound back there shouldn't be any problems at all.

Its OK if you tell the buyer, Linda's truck has the chip speedo adjuster, so the odo reads in miles as well. We had a document saying the truck was imported with **Km's, the speedo was converted to run in miles, so the clock was reset at the equivilent milage so it reads true in future.

Its only illegal to defraud someone.
