i got what i think is a 5"x3" oval tailpipe which exits right next to the towbar bar, i thought it'd be protected by the bar but it's still been squashed, side exit is the way to go.
Ive found some 'inline' noise making pipes Thinking about putting one of them on an then running more stainless out the side, My Dad has a hydrolic pipe bender, So all i need is some stainless tube.
If we want the exhaust as unrestricted as possible for the turbo to work at it's optimum, what would happen if you was to get an old box, cut a hole each end and slide the pipe straight through it, then weld the box in place, effectively leaving a completely straight through exhaust, but looking as though it had a silencer box fitted.
What would it sound like?
And would it do anything for the performance of the engine?

Get thee from this forum!!!
You want a device that makes noise for noise sake?!?!
Get yourself a Saxo and fit a dustbin under the rear bumper!

Good thinkin!!! Ive got a straight though system. I think.... One pipe coming down from the turbo all the way to that big bin on the end

Very little I suspect. I'm absolutely sure that air filters and exhausts do next to nowt. The ECU is god basically, because it controls the important stuff (OK, there are ways of fooling it) and is therefore the place to go to change stuff.
However, Toyota have spent billions of yen making the Surf as good a COMPROMISE as it can be, so all we're doing with our £200 a month budgets is tweaking slightly what Toyota wanted it to be.
If you want big power, fit a V8. Will it be more impressive? Goddamn YES!!! Will it be better off road - no.

Is that straight? or is that a 'end box'?
That's a silencer box, lump it off with a hacksaw leave an inch or three of pipe on it and stick it on ebay for some mug to buy. Run around for a few days with the exhaust like that and if it's ok then make up a dummy box and see if it goes through the next MOT, get the MOT done a few eeks early incase it don't go through then you can get it sorted whilst still driving the truck.
Nah, psychosomatic. You spend so much time farting about getting dirty in the cold and skinning your knuckles, you HAVE to BELIEVE its had an effect - so it HAS - for you...
Stick it on a dyno and it shows no difference (maybe 5bhp - which in the testing trade is well down in the measurement uncertaintly area)
as for performance who knows, it's a 2 tonne truck i got used to it now, i can drive it gently and get 10 miles to the gallon or i can drive it leadbooted and get 10 miles to the gallon but make more noise - I still don't seem to go anywhere quick.

Pretty much hits the nail on the head for Surf ownership mate!

Im in the same boat as you mate. My 1st truck the accelerator was the "smoke" pedal, an now in the 2nd one its a noise pedal!
