Both, Ok so you get slightly less mpg from an auto. One is better than the other and vice versa in certain circumstances, but I don't think you can absolutely say one is without doubt better than the other.
        As said personal preference.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

As other greater voices have said before me, very little to sway one towards one or the other, Having had both 2.4 manual and 3.0 auto, I honestly could not express a preference for either box, both are very slick and perform very well, each having their own unique benefits and drawbacks.
For me it's a case of choosing a vehicle on the basis of its condition, spec, mileage etc etc, the transmission type (in a surf anyway) to me is purely incidental.

              Choices

I don't think you're going to get an answer to this question. In my personal experience:

Off road - when going down hill, the auto box isn't good for engine braking, manual is much more effective. However for rocking the car out of sticky situations such as snow or mud the autobox wins hands down. Also when ascending hills, the auto box doesn't ever take the torque off the wheels when changing gears, like a manual will when you press the clutch, so auto is better for low speed manouvering in tricky situations.

On road - if you're wanting rapid accelleration and driveability - manual every time. If it's relaxed cruising you want - auto every time.

In the end as stated many times above - it comes down to personal preference.

              That's my thoughts anyway.

              Rob

We have same... 2.4 Manual and 3.0 Auto. I like them both as they are. 2.4 manual has a little more control on a steep very muddy descent but the engine braking on the 3.0 auto is very good for almost any other circ. Interestingly we get very similar mpg out of them - the 3.0 being slightly better (but then its 5 years younger)

There some more opinions on this thread...

Off-roading- auto. Better control of the low down torque (select L4 2 or even 1 before making descents)

On-road- auto. Beats manual hands down for quick, seamless gearchanges (despite how good many people THINK they are at it). Do a standing start race and you'll see what I mean. Most drivers will fumble or misjudge the manual gear change.

In town- auto anytime especially that stop/start sh*t we allways end up in.

Motorway- auto. Relax, stick on the ECT and use that kick-down to good effect.

Mpg- auto or manual (not really in issue in this fuel ecomony range....)

Driving and eating a banana - auto.

Lets hear it for the auto

I have driven manuals for 30 years, this is my first auto, and I love it. All that town driving in an auto is just so relaxing.

As for acceleration. I have shoved my foot through the floor and held it on kickdown, and used the overdrive button to maintain the forward thrust. It can be made to go....well it would if the M/T tyres didn't spin up so much.

Cornering is a laugh too, the auto can be made to keep the power on right round bends without having to play with a gearbox, it all adds to the fun.

Having said all of that, the auto Surf is at its best just cruising along, foot resting on the pedal, slumped back in the seat, just looking down on the rest of the world with a smug grin on my face.

I think auto's have the edge on manuals, cos i can easily smoke me fag and drink me coffee on the way to work every morning.with out messing around trying to change gear.

Now if you had a manual and tried to do that it would be very dangerous .
