                  Villeneuve to race for UNICEF

By Diego Mejia Friday, October 5th 2007, 03:40 GMT

Jacques Villeneuve will drive the No. 27 UNICEF Toyota Camry this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway where he will attempt to qualify for his Nextel Cup debut and at the same time raise money for children around the world.

The 1997 Formula One World Champion will drive a blue and white car with the UNICEF logo on its hood, hoping his debut in the NASCAR Nextel Cup goes beyond his own benefit.

"This Cup race is in addition to the test and race schedule that we'd committed to, so we had the chance to do something different with the car," Villeneuve said. "I have a desire to see children all over the world safe, healthy and happy, and that's UNICEF's sole focus."

In addition to running the UNICEF colors on his Cup car at Talladega, the Canadian will also sport them on his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Toyota Tundra. The money raised through Villeneuve's promotional efforts will go to UNICEF-supported child health programmes.

"We are extremely grateful to have a Canadian icon like Jacques Villeneuve demonstrate such phenomenal support for UNICEF in this way," said Nigel Fisher, president and CEO of UNICEF Canada.

"Millions of eyes will be on that car this weekend, and that means millions of eyes will be on UNICEF and our work for children."

Nearly ten years ago Jacques Villeneuve created 'Formula Charity', which is based in Switzerland and aids a number of children's charities across Europe.
