My old 1st gen had a sticker inside saying max payload was 350kg with no passengers. I imagine a 2nd/3rd gen to be a little more than that... not sure about 500kg tho!

I've had half a ton in the back of mine before, Landcruiser springs though.

p.s. the rear seats were down to spread the load.

You should be ok with half a tonne if you fold the seats and keep the load as central as possible, the 2nd Gen is rated for a total payload of 610kg,

I've had 3/4 ton of flooring, it did that all the boot (with the seats down) and the floor lining ended up on the passenger seat. So the load was well spread.
I do have the L A Supertrux 2" lift kit fitted with the ES9000, which does make a big difference.
I wouldn't advice driving too far with this weight, as the rear was well down.

I must've run close to 1/2 tonne on roughtrax +2" springs & std. shocks, does feel unnerving on corners and roundabouts with too much weight in. The surf was almost sat on it's arse though it looked and felt overloaded. I wouldn't fancy it now the ARBs removed.
