for anyone ripping their cd's whether it's for iPod or just to back them up, download iTunes.

It's so easy, i have used loads of other software but iTunes is so easy and quick and fully automatic, really handy if you've got 2 cd drives cos you can simply set up your ripping options once, then stick a cd in each drive when iTunes is running and it will rip both, download the CDDb info and tag all the files.

There is the issue of compatibility with other players /software though...

you can change the options to extract to mp3, should work with any player then.

That's the only reason i hadn't bothered with it until i finally gave in and bought an iPod last week, wish i'd tried the software sooner now. I wouldn't have bothered buying an iPod, would've just used itunes to rip all my CDs (again). Then written all the mp3s to dvd.

Defeats the object of having something that has a lossless encoder built in then though.

I use the Apple encoder, and playback over the wireless network to a Squeezebox network music player used with an Arcam amp and Mission speakers. Really recommend the squeezebox with the lossless encoding. Sounds indistinguishable from my Musical Fidelity CD player.

i use winamp with NAD amp and MISSION speakers (sounds like you have good taste too Andy!)
I used to use squeezebox on my old PDA and it was good but slow, I must give it another go.

I'm talking about Squeezebox hardware, but Logitech's audio arm, Slim Devices. It's VERY cool!

I use Foobar and a Logitech 5.1 system, with the music shared from a central repository on the server. Theoretically its possible to stream them from anywhere in teh world with a fast enough connection.

Nearly every CD has been ripped win WMP @ 320 kbps.

New CDs get ripped once and then filed away.

well sorry i mentioned it, i've had no problems with iTunes so far. My machine runs a hell of a lot quicker with iTunes ripping than it does with WMP ripping. The only place i've found iTunes is where i put it in the start menu. I ripped about 60 cds yesterday afternoon whilst doing other stuff on the computer with no problems, another 140 or so to do over the next few days, so if my opinion changes i'll let y'all know.

I use Itunes, No real reason why... just do!

I love it personally, the menus a lot neater then WMP.

No problems at all with it.
