key wont come out of ignition it wont turn enough to release from lock barrel.
presume there is an interlock on it but im new to the surf and dont know whether it is mechanical or electrical.

I had something very similar. My advice is drop the dash panel on the drivers side and just poke an fiddle!! Worked for me. Trapped my keys in twice. Both times it wouldnt start either. just fiddle!

Sounds pathetic but it worked for me.

As Woodzie suggested, probably the gear shifter senser, try giving the shifter a wiggle forwards. use the red button to relese and try puting in P again!

            rang another surf owner
took tunnel trim and stuff off
apparently small metal rod attached to red button is also actuated
by gear lever, now all i have to do is find where to put it.

many thanks to all who offered help and advice
this forum is a really good place
            thanks again
