  • Custom Exhaust Imminent

I'm gonna get 1 fitted. 2.5" from the turbo flange to the box.
My question is: Do I have a middle box or back box? I don't want to be failing my MOT due to excess smoke and have to get another box installed.

    Thanks Men

The EXHAUST place will know the answer to this.

I may be completely wrong on this, but I thought the boxes where there to reduce the noise, not the smoke?

        ok..
our surfs exhausts are pretty quiet on the noise factor anyway, so whenever i/we have built them we always leave the 2nd 4" round box out of the system. you dont notice its not there, it looks neater at the back too.
now the big box in the middle is a must and they will put the biggest box they can in that space usually.

if your going from the turbo back in 2.5 you will probably be going from the mild steel pipe where its easy to get to unless your going to get a turbo flange made up and tbh its not worth the money. the reason being is that plasma or laser cut flanges cost quite a bit, and you already have one on there. we used to weld in situ, so majority of the time original downpipes were never removed.

having an exhaust done WILL NOT make it smoke. unless your turbo, rings, valve stems or something else is already knackered AND you had a catalytic converter that was removed therefore exposing the problem and releasing the smoke out the exhaust.
BUT you dont have a CAT so if it doesnt smoke now, it wont smoke after.

Thanks for that. I'm not paying for a new flange to be made, unless they have them on the shelf.
This is imminent as the back box is shot and for £200 I can get a new mild steel system made from the turbo back.

£200 is a very good price especially from the turbo.
at where i used to work, just from the downpipe would be £300. for the turbo pipe your looking at another £150 - £200.. but that was guaranteed for life in stainless rust proof 304 grade..

are the boxes freeflow in mild steel? whats the wall thickness? is it double skinned?
i personally wouldnt have a mild system because it will rust through again, and if im going off road especially.
a mild front pipe however would last the life of the car, so long as the car was used. the exhaust heat keeps it dry/protected.

I have been quoted £475 for a SS system with a 25 year Gtee. More than I'm prepared to spend and the car won't be around that long. I don't off road. The mild steel has lasted 15 years so that's not too bad.

I am waiting to connect the coolant hoses. I hope to do them tonight. The plumber is soldering up some 15mm t's for the connection. The power and switch worked when I had the fuse in.

How did you connect the 3/4" pipe to the heater chamber as they are only 12mm.

if you mean the original standard exhaust then this is because its double skinned 2mm wall thickness mild steel tube. takes forever to rust through.
kwik fit and those sorts when replacing exhausts only use patened ones that are 2mm wall thick on the straights and about 1.5mm on the bends (because of how they are bent) and only single thick. so tis why bends rust through quicker, and they last about 2 years max.

Damn still undecided what to do. The lasts post have made me even more frustrated at having to fork out for $$$$ , but I am going to need one, for in a fortnights time as I am towing a caravan to Scotland. After towing it to Wales with knackered backbox at Easter. The car started getting pretty warm inside.!
I presume cos' the exhaust was heating the underside ! Dinny fancy a warm bum for 800kms in the heat of summer.

if your back box is shot and its just that - on the bend over the axle where they all usually go, then get some flexible steel tube, cut the cr@ppy pipe work off and run new pipe out the back, seal with high temp silicone (kitchen & bathroom) sealant and exhaust clamps.
this will get you out of trouble for a reasonable amount of time. and having exhaust gas blown straight on to the metal work will melt off paint, and most likely smoulder carpet.. especially on the motorway.

Its the middle big box which is stuffed. I had the rear pipe fall apart coming back from Scotland a couple of years ago on the motorway. Wondered why the dogs where hot in the back and the carpet and rug had melded to the metal !
