  • ATF in fuel

As you may or may not be aware, my fuel pump leaks, and I have now found a s/h replcement, but while I am waiting for it to be removed from it's current home, I have been in formed that if I put 1 litre ATF/tank full of diesel this will make the o rings swell back to their original size and therefore stop the leak, albeit only on a temporary basis.

    Any thoughts on this?

    Good/bad/worth a try/OMG don't do it?

It's akin to using Redex or suchlike. Apparently a bit better. Some of us do it to give the fuel system a flush through every now and then.

Ok, cool, so it won't have any detrimental effect then?

I'll give it a try as a stop gap.

Is 1 litre ok or can I put more in?

      Cheers Matt.

      Robert.

Nope. The advice came from one of the Volvo forums originally. Some of them fill the fuel filter with neat ATF when they change the filter. Quite good for the injectors, apparently. I've done it a couple of times, (about a pint in a tenners worth of diesel last time), and nowt's gone bang yet.

            does it actually do anything?
has anyone had a look at injectors / valves after running it?

I wouldn't try it, ATF contains anti-friction and other additives that may do more harm than good to already old/worn injectors. May help lubricate the fuel pump though.

Dump all the bottle in. Or half, if you're feeling cautious.

No, fill the fuel filter up with it before you screw the new filter on - and get ready for some smoke!

Either. If you happen to be changing the fuel filter, fill that up. If not, dump the contents of the bottle in the tank.
