Vets bills? rant

I'm a heating engineer, and my philosophy has always been" if I can't fix it, I won't charge you" I wish vets and mechanics did the same, they might get it right more of the time, instead of the customer paying for their learning curve.

sometimes things just aren't fixable though! you cant really compare the two - i dont know anything about heating, but i assume it's either fixable or replaceable all the time. i guess pets are too, but people generally dont want to replace them! there are a lot of diseases that just aren't fixable - if we didn't charge for any of them we'd be rather out of pocket! cancer, terminal liver, kidney, heart disease - all manageable for a certain period of time - none of them curable.

well, i dont make the charges - i just type in on the computer what i've done and it tells me the price. my boss has the tough decisions on what to overcharge and what to undercharge for.

Ya can buy anythin off the internet now, tis ok if ya can job ya own like me mate does - I can't bring meself to do it.

yeah some people are a bit squeamish,
most people i knew used to do most of the general medical themselves ie stitching , jabs , cleaning wounds.

i believe i deserve more than a mechanic - that's my belief, you can have yours, but i'm entitled to state mine. i'm all up for a good debate - if you're not then that's fine - we'll agree to disagree.

To be fair to Nikki, she does have a point ..you get it wrong with a car it don't start....you get it wrong with an animal it dies...
a full blown vet trains for 7 yrs thats longer than a doctor does..!!

Vet nurse's.....? Are they the same 15 year old girls who mop up dog pee in the treatment room.

Most folk get too attatched to a pet nowadays and in some cases the animal would be better destroyed than left to suffer IE my business partner had a 15 year old black lab and as expected it's rear end lost all power to the extent it lay in it's own foul, five fukin times his wife took the dog to be destroyed and five fukin times she came back with another wonder cure which did naff all but make the dog suffer more 'till he took it to another vet and got the dog relief via the jab.


YES, she was ignoring fate, YES she loved the dog to the extent it didnt matter anymore if it was in constant pain, BUT shouldnt the vet tell the truth for the dogs sake instead of seing a daft sobbing woman with money to spend. IE animal first, owner second and PURSE last.

i think the vet nurses would be rather offended by the suggestion that all they do is mop up $$$$. they're highly valuable members of our team. they do 2yrs of training and exams before being able to call themselves a VN and to be honest, most of them knew more than me when i graduated and i'm convinced some of them still do.

and in reference to your labrador story - normally i find it's me trying to convince the owner that the dog no longer has any quality of life and they should do the kindest thing. one of the saddest parts of my job is seeing animals suffer who should have been put out of their misery months/years beforehand. i hate seeing animals fade away to nothing with that look of sadness in their eyes, but i have extremely limited powers to make someone put an animal to sleep. i've done it once in the last year when i point blank refused to let them take their animal out of the consulting room because it was in such a bad state.

Honest... Never met a vet nurse only the wee 13-15 year old girl in the treatment room.

Two vet practises in my town, the small one refused point blank too see my distressed spaniel pup 'cos she was "too busy", took same pup to BIG vet, instant attention and fix to nasty mites @ £35 for a tube of stuff on her neck THEN the young "vet" tells me my bitch has nads and needs a nads off operation!!! Flora (my mothers name) the spaniel is 18 months now no op and deffo no nads. BUT.....

Nikki, Flora has developed a limp today, nowt spaza and she forgets it when she is out, will rest be enuf or should I give her more wzki?

It's quite easy to see both points of view on this one.

No offence intended Nikki, but specialised areas of expertise do tend to have some leeway in what they charge, and sometimes may be excessive. I said 'may', btw.

Other view. People these days do expect to pay f*** all for anything important, yet wil spend a small fortune on a whim or something to keep up with their friends/neighbours.

Personally, my empathy is with the animals, not the people.
