has anyone got any ideas on how to stop the rattle from the rear wheel carrier? It seems like it has play at the top hinge joint but there is no visible adjustment for it.

Grease it and adjust the rubber stops outward. I think there's a nut and a screw head you need to adjust.

I'm talking about the rear door mounted type. They are fixed to the door and the carrier arm rests against them.

They're fixed to the carrier arm, not the door. The ones that look like doorstops.
