      Seriously - it's a semi circular bit of metal that fits into a groove in a shaft and a pulley to keep them together

        Quite simply its a piece of metal that fits in a slot cut into whatever its going to hold. http://www.mfgsupply.com/MowerMiscWK.html this will show it better

                              Can be made from various materials in addition to steel, such as polymer plastics, and yes, even wood. Depends on application obviously. Can be various shapes and sizes including 'tapered' and 'stepped' etc.
