        Cheers Guys

Thanks for a great response, II'm 90% sold I think even my girlfriend's encouraging me. Have to say I'm swaying towards the 3ltr though would consider the 2.4 with the engine mods. Not 100% sure on the differences in the 2nd and 3rd gens so there's a bit more homework to do but that's ha;f the enjoyment. Any guides on a price? what would 3500 to 4000 get for the money?

I want my 4x4 smile back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I bought mine of a dodgy Irish bloke

I should have known better. It was over a grand cheaper than others on the market.
But she looked well nice. To cut a long story short. After 3 weeks the cylinder head went, cost £600 for replacement. After 2 months of being back on the road after the head replacement, the gear box went (auto).
Hubby had to tow me from Newport to west wales in his tranny van.(Didn't have breakdown, box was knackered so stuck it in N.
Anyway put box in a garage in Cardiff. After 3 months of being fobbed off on the phone I drove down there to find they hadn't even cracked it open..
So I took it off them. Tried to find another auto gearbox specialist. No joy.
But then I saw an Ad for a surf being broken in Taff's Well. Phoned as soon as they opened. Bloke said they were gold dust and he usually supplies a gearbox garage in Cardiff??????I was suspicous. He let me have the box for £350 and it's been sorta ok ever since, apart from a few false alarms(another story). What bugs me is the original garage were gonna charge £750 to recondition it, and they prob would just given me the box I bought from the breakers...So apart from that I think I've now prob paid what it would've cost for a decent surf. Plus I know the engines been done.

The main visual differences between the 3rd and 2nd gen Surfs are:

Fuel filler flap is on the passenger side on a 3rd gen, drivers side on the 2nd.

3rd gen has a lift up rear door like most other estate cars, the 2nd gen has a drop down tailgate like a pick-up.

2nd gen Surfs have a small chrome nudge bar as standard, 3rd gens have a plastic covered nudge bar incorporated into the bumper.

For your budget you could get a very nice, late 3.0 2nd gen (M reg) or possibly an early 3rd gen. (N reg.)

Just put my deposit down and I can't stop smiling

Had to fight for it, and no matter what anyone says I absolutely love it in white and I've not seen one before.

I'll see if the guy can throw in a bucket of mud. Tell you what though as soon as I sat in it I had a feeling of power and I get to play with challenger tanks on weekends!
