  • 3rd Gen - Spacers, tyres, towing and suspension lifts

I've spent most of the morning doing searches and reading threads on spacers, lifts and tyres and I'm still not totally clear - this may be due to my age, the effects of teenage triplets, the result of 22 years in a green suit or maybe just cos I'm thick ........

Anyway can we have all the hairdresser comments together please - either before or after the responses to the serious stuff ?

No ? Didn't think so but it was worth asking - c'est la vie !

    Anyway, here we go ........

    Current state:
Bog standard 3rd gen with hard/soft adjustment & 265/70/16's fitted

    Thinking about:
30mm spacers, 2" suspension lift and bigger/better rubber

    BUT:
We don't do a huge mileage
We don't do much offroading (may do more after the lift though!)
We tow a caravan so that's got to be viable after any work is complete
Apart from when caravanning it normally runs with the boot empty(ish)

    The questions:

    1. What is the largest rubber we can run (without modding the arches) on standard rims with just 30mm spacers ?

    2. What is the largest rubber we can run (without modding the arches) on standard rims with a 2" suspension lift and NO spacers ?

    3. What is the largest rubber we can run (without modding the arches) on standard rims with a 2" suspension lift and 30mm spacers ?

    4. Am I right to say that a 2" suspension lift won't require any mods to shocks, brake lines etc i.e. just longer/heavier springs ?

    5. Will a lift and spacers affect the geometry much and in what way ?

    6. Can the geometry be sorted ? (and how much will it cost !)

    7. If we have the largest rubber and the 2" lift how much higher will the towball be and does anybody know where I can get an EASILY removeable drop plate of the right size to restore the ball to the correct height for towing ?

    8. IF we do more offroading what's the worst that can happen as a result of using the standard adjustable shocks and the 2" lift ?

    9. What's the overall effect likely to be on stability ?

    PS
Do NOT mention any of this to Jackie - she'll be keen on the idea until she sees the costs involved ......... I want to handle most of it as "handling improvements" and hope she doesn't twig what I'm up to ......

I've near enough sold her on the spacers widening the track thus making towing easier on rutted roads and she's questioning the existing rubber (Apache ST's) as it slides like hell in the damp - nothing at all to do with me giving it huge amounts of boot mid-corner honest !

Don't understand any of your questions, but my 3rd gen has had all that done and drives and looks great, me thinks, then i'am biased.

Anyway Mark - before we strayed off the subject I was going to ask what size boot's you're running, do the springs give you a lift and whether the handling's improved running empty, loaded or both.

BTW - do you tow at all ?

I replaced the rear suspension cause the previous owner had towed something big with it & flattened the coil springs. I used the Milners springs on my 2nd gen as i tow a caravan, The 3rd gen seamed to be a bit soft on the rear end as stock in comparison so its got the 20% stronger springs & Procomp es9000 shocks. It feels a lot better on the road now.
