Battery charging

Following a query on Leisure batteries,
and charging them off the alternator on my VW camper as I go along
on holiday in the day time

I was puzzled by the Surf layout,

Given they have Two Batteries wired in parallel


A; What happens in the event of a duff battery,
does it take the good one with it?

B; Are they charged as One batteery of 12x? cells
I think what I'm trying to say, is there's no apparent switching
as in ... charge one battery then switch and top-up the other.

Thats a vote either way,

Is their anyway of putting an ammeter on an individual battery
to monitor its charging out of interest
to detect a failing unit

The batteries are in parallel and charge up concurrently, if one goes down and you don't notice it's highly likely to take the other one out too

I always thought so, but someone said the LandCruiser 90 Series which is so much like a Mk3 was 12volt throughout except the starter moter which was 24volt.

So I could fit one really good starter battery and one leisure battery and split them when using the leisure battery and still guarentee a start in the morning.

Edit. Milner show the same part no. for a LN185 and a 90 Series LC starter motor, so they must be the same voltage.

I could say I'm God's gift to women, but it wouldn't mean it's true. (It is, though).

Get the beefiest battery you can as your starter, and install a split charge system for the leisure battery.

Serious Question

I don't really like the idea of an electronic system.

Could I just fit a mechanical isolator to the leisure battery, then when the truck is started switch in the leisure battery which would charge with the truck running?

I guess the danger would be if the leisure battery was flat, it could draw all the power from the starter battery if the truck was only driven for a short time maybe?
