  • speed camera detectors? Recommendations?

Further to my post this morning r.e Speedo & Cameras, has anyone got any recommendations on speed camera detectors?

I’m guessing a GPS based (Sat-nav / detector combined) version would be best for me, especially since I don’t get own a Sat-Nav. And there is talk of possibly banning the Radar and Laser detectors.

    Here are a few reviews:

Oh, and I’m not looking for something that helps me speed between cameras, rather I see it as a useful set of extra “eyes” to help me stay safe and legal while driving.

    Thanks in advance.

My GPS has speed camera database downloaded onto it which seems to be good enough.

Something to be aware of with current laser speed detection is they only need to land a few pulses onto your car and they've got your speed. In other words, when you detect it, they've already got you.

Just make sure your speedo is OK against a GPS (drive on a straight road and check, GPS is no good in corners) and watch the speed limits. Dont feed your money into the 'piggy banks!'

Have you tried driving in your slippers?

Don't you judge your speed by the fuel gauge in a V6 anyway?

            I’m not a lead foot

On Sunday I drove from home to a shooting range at “the bog” Minsterley… a round trip of 209KM. Most of the journey was on open roads A483 past Wrexham, A5 to Shrewsbury, and then the last section along the A488 up into the Shropshire hills… with some quite steep, narrow & twisty roads.

Filled the tank to the brim again next day (which took £30) so that’s what it cost to do about 125 miles. I’m not sure how badly the hills affected consumption but this is virtually no different to what I get driving to work each day. Oh and I was sticking to the speed limits and using cruise control where I could.

I will say that the Surf drove faultlessly and I was very pleased with it…… especially when on a long section of uphill duel carriageway I was easily able to pass a newish Nissan pick-up that had been holding up the traffic. The driver didn’t look too happy.

As far as I understand it all detectors are illegal and I agree with Apache if you can detect it, its to late ! stick to GPS based ones and try to drive at the speed limit.

Got a Valentine V1 on the bike, some false alerts in shopping areas due to auto door sensors but never seen a speed trap there anyway, if it does warn anywhere else it's NEVER wrong although fixed camera warnings can be last minute due to low power radar levels used in them so I double up with a fixed camera GPS too.

These gadgets are legal here and always will be but dont even think of using one over in EUland = instant jail, them $$$$$$$s dont care about saftey the want you to speed and cough up mega fines.

Detectors aint illegal, deflectors and blasters are. Not alot of laser up here far tooo many dodgy court cases sent them down

There is one deffo way to beat ALL fixed and mobile cameras, it's called "reasonable doubt" IE somebody "steals" your number plate, report the "theft" and keep the pink slip and as long as your ugly mug aint in the piccy pink slip = get out of jail free e v e r y time.

There is another way absolutley failsafe but my traffic "pals" wont tell me

speed cameras around where I live are all painted bright yellow, quite hard to miss. The police also have to give prior warning of speed traps, those nice pictures of cameras on roadside signs. So perhaps a pair of specs may be the answer Or perhaps people could just slow down a bit and stick to the limit, save fuel and perhaps even save a life, but dont get me on my soapbox again

Ah, but it all depends on where they speed and if they get caught. It's all about being aware of what is going on around you and being able to react. If you get it wrong you have to take the consequences and accept that you were in the wrong Now I'm not going to get drawn into the speed is safe and it's all the fault of the other guy debate cos I'm enjoying a glass or two of highland gold and de-stressing

Thank you, but I do have good eyesight

If you go and have a read of my other post you will see that:

                            1. I strongly suspect that my speedo is under reading (as now checked by my old GPS) by 5 mph so my indicated 40 mph may have really been a true 45 mph
                            2. The camera I passed was bright yellow and I have seen it many times before. It has always been set up to trap drivers going in the opposite direction. Apparently it has (recently) been modified to catch on-coming traffic.
                            3. I only learnt the other day that such front facing cameras even existed.
                            4. I do try hard to keep on the lookout for cameras and stick within the limit, but if my speedo is out, then I have the odds stacked against me!

Did read your last post mate. Being an ex plod I can say that speed traps as a rule will allow for a 10% speedo error, so if you were doing 45 in a 40 limit expect a summons. If the speed trap was on a dual carriageway the cameras are usually fixed in the central reservation so the can be turned around to face either way, so don't take things for granted cos they can change. To be honest it's better to drive under the speed limit if you want to keep a clean licence, you will get to your destination just the same, and in a Surf you will save on fuel costs. But you never can tell you may get away with it this time.
