Long roof bars

    Long roof bars

    I want to fit some long roof bars so that I can carry 8*4 sheets of material on the roof, what are the longer type bars available (s c r a p yard etc) and from which vehicles would they come from?
    I believe that Bushwacker has some, does any one else?
    Pictures / idea of fitting appreciated.

    I would willingly buy a thule roof rack kit but it doesn't seem to utilise the really long roof that the surf has.

      These are almost identical to mine 'cept mine came off a Peugeot 406 estate.

      You'll need to drop the headlining down to fit then as they bolt on from the inside.

        I'd been wondering if they would fit. Also there are some for a Peugeot 306, 405, and 406 on Ebay at the moment just search roof rails.

        I'm thinking of doing this as I've noticed that the thule roof bars are slowly pushing the tops of the doors out.
        Gone from 4x4 to 1x2

          Hi Bushwacker, any tips on where to position these bars on the roof? Did you use cross rails to gauge the correct position? Any places NOT to drill?

          Thinking of fitting some myself.
          Mine WAS a 150 bhp V6 and ran on PETROL

            The only worry when drilling the roof is if you have the electric sunroof fitted as the track/guides is/are quite close to the roof edges. You'll see where the best places to drill when you drop the headlinig anyway.
            As for the width, again 'cos I have a sunroof I had to fit the rails along the edges of the roof, but I made my own cross bars out of an old aluminium ladder and exhaust clamps.
            I think there are some crossbars you can buy that are width adjustable, Vauxhall ones I think.

              I got some Volvo 940 bars on ebay, they look a good fit but they've been rolling around the back of a Parcelfarce van since Monday so I haven't offered them up yet.

              Since then I got the import catelogue from Specialist Leisure. They do a track and cross bar system that looks similar to what the 'merkins get as factory option (?) on the 4runner.



              It looks very nice, but only rated to 75kg. No idea on price as you have to phone them.

                  If a set of roof rails is sourced from an old car (eg Peugeot), what roof bars would be used with it, or are they all of a set standard?
