Idler Arm help

Hi All

I am changing my Idler arm .. sounded easy 3 bolts and a ball joint.

Bolts easy but can I get the ball joint apart..... So had a thought, get the bottle jack and jack it up on the bottom of the bolt of the ball joint while it jams against the frame. Winding the jack up and the truck is starting to lift off and no movement on the bolt!! Am I missing some kind of pin/clip that needs removing or is it brute force?

I don't want to break anything so some help would be great

Hello mate ... easiest way if you do not have a splitter is to give item C a sharp hit with a heavy hammer in the direction of your arrows on photo..... with the jack sitting like it is under pressure it should pop right out !

Balljoint splitter is less than £10 at halfrauds,

Grease the prongs to avoid damage to the rubbers.

If you're replacing the Idler arm dont worry about splitting the rubber boot as the new idler arm comes complete with new ball joint and rubber boot

Thanks Fenman one solid tap with hammer as you said and it popped off.

I don't know why it works, but it does.

Get the steering wheel and turn it from left to right, then with it on near full lock in either direction, hit it with a plastic or copper mallet side on, it will then release.

I've done loads of these on my Defender without the use of a ball joint extractor. Works every time.
