  • On board video???

Contemplating buying a laptop to take off roading in my truck. To use with the gps and possibly to take video via a camera mounted on roof (or where ever)

Is there a minimum requirement/spec you'd need to accomplish this with a laptop?? Would a web cam thing suit or is there something made for such things??

    Cheers

I run a toshiba P3 laptop in the truck to run autoroute with gps, memory map with gps and i have use a web cam to film with but found the quallity not great and sometimes jurkey as in hi quallity mode it only films at (i think) a max of 20 fps. Normal mode is about 15fps. Some more memory may help as it only has 128mb. i find it better than other gps. i have the laptop linked to a touch screen in the dash. hope this helps you decide

i reckon your best bet would be something along these lines http://www.sports-camera.com/helmet_cameras.htm and appropriate TV card / USB video thingmybob, almost all CCTV cameras run on DC 12V. Or use a camcorder and transfer it to the computer afterwards, or a camcorder with DV out and laptop with firewire port to connect it to. As has already been said the quality of a webcam will leave a lot to be desired.
