  • Tailgate window stuck down

    Hi all

My tailgate window decide to get stuck in the down postition yesterday. The motor doesn't make any noise, so I'm assuming that it's died. Does anyone know of a a way of lifting the rear window by hand? Also anyone with a spare window motor?

You'll have to remove the motor to be able to lift the glass, but it will be easier as the glass is down and you're able to open the tailgate.
Open tailgate, remove carpet panel, (pull off) remove steel plate (cross head screws) peel back polythene sheet, unplug the blue connector plug and remove motor (8mm bolts)

An 8mm ratchet spanner is the perfect tool for this job, see pic.

Make sure of easy stuff like fuses and the window lock button on the driver door.

No quick fix to it if it has gone.

Strip off the carpet panel, metal plate and plastic from the tailgate. Sitting in the car wiggle your right hand in to get to the three little bolts holding the motor in.

Temporary fix - one of the back door motors will fit - can't remember if its left or right one though!

Have tried the fuses and they're all good. It had been playing up for a while now and was getting very slow and sticking. Had a look at the window motor yesterday, and saw how much fun it'll be to take out and to make things better it was raining hard, so I decided to go to the pub instead.

When you try to raise it, are you hearing a click from the relay?

I didn't listen for one so I don't know. Where abouts is the relay?

You should be able to hear the relay easily. Press the down button, you should hear that same click when you press the up button. If there's no click, the relay's knackered.

Quick fix is to hook the battery directly up to the motor. Either get a battery or run some wires from it and put the wires straight on to the motor's terminals. If nothing happens, reverse the polarity. If nothing still happens, your motor's knackered.

Opposite way round, I believe. No click is a wiring fault, (loom between tailgate and body), and if there are clicks it's either the relays or motor.

I will bow to your better judgement on this, but I would have thought that the click was the relay moving and the lack of click was the relay not moving because it's fecked.

When mine went, I had the relay box torn out and wired straight through (with new relays of course). It's anarchy, I could theoretically open my boot from inside with the window up if I crawled into the boot. Whatever next? My rear wiper doesn't work any more though.....

The relays still work in theory, but the contacts are pitted/oxidised/welded, hence no contact, or breaking, of the points, but it functions in every other way as usual.

Take it you never tried plugging it back in to see if you could get your wiper working then?

I've tried controlling the window from the inside and from the key on the tailgate. Both approaches do not work. I haven't tried to work the rear wiper though.

Sorry, that's me throwing the red herrings around. The wiper is on a different relay. You should have no worries with it as long as you don't tear the box out, throw it away and then wonder why your wiper don't work.....
