  • Computer help needed

    Hi guys,

I was putting my Defender up for sale on a Military vehicle website. The site directed me to the secure paymemt page (Worldpay). I noticed that on the bottom toolbar there was NO SSL128bit padlock icon displayed.

When you buy something online, should this icon be displayed at all times on all sites, or doesn't Worldpay put this padlock onto my toolbar?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Andy

You should normally look out for 2 things, the padlock as you mentioned, and the web address should start with https:// rather than http:// (note the 'S' before the colon denoting secure)
Have you by any chance upgraded to internet explorer 7 as in that case the padlock has moved to the top of the screen between the address bar and the search box, the move can catch you out....

I have uprated the internet explorer, but can't tell you what number it is. Is it the one where all the icons have changed?

Thanks for the info. I'm going to have another look....

Go to the 'help' menu and click 'about'. That will tell you what version you have.

          Just tried it again.

There is no https:// and there is no padlock anywhere on the page.

          What does this mean????

The page where you fill out your bank card details does have a padlock, but it's a picture of one on the Worldpay page itself, not on the toolbar saying what "bit" it is....

Part of the Bank Of Scotland group. If you go to the Login page it has the https:// security heading.

Its possible it is a secure page in a frame on a standard page (not a good idea if this is the case), can u post the address of the page you're unsure of and we'll have a look.

                The website address is www.milweb.net

But I have to enter all my details first before getting to the payment page so I'm not able to show you. This is the email I received after asking about it.

Because it sits in a frame until it goes to the secuire server - as soon as you leave our site (after entering your name and address) to enter your card number you are on worldpay's secure server.

please make payment at www.milweb.net/payment/webvert.htm so we can place this advert.

But once I am on this page it still does not display the padlock or https://

when I press continue to secure server it goes to a TLS v1.0 256 bit AES (1024 bit DHE_RSA/SHA) encrypted page with https.
certificate seems good and secure (im using Opera but all browsers should cope OK)

Yep, as Tim said, once you proceed past this page the resultant woldpay page where you will enter your credit card details is a secure one, displaying the https: and the padlock. It has a valid security certificate issued by Thawte, seems ok to me.

Yes, I have to say Vince it is a very hard decision. I've owned my Defender since it's release from the RAF in August 1998, I bought it at auction and put it on the road myself. I've also kept her in tip top original condition with over £2,700 spent on original parts. It will be the first time in 19 years that I will be without a Military vehicle. I'm gutted

But I have been offered a job in Canada and it has to go. I also have my series 3 that's got to go.

Eventually, nearer to my depart date I will have to sell my Surf too...

But all is not lost, as I have found a new love......
