I measured the housing and the max length for the thread will be 10mm. Make sure you use a seal as on the original plug. Without looking I'm not sure if there is room for a hose tail. Will have a look when I get a chance.

Just been to have a look and there's some form of bracket underneath where that plug is, so looks like the tail idea might be out. You wouldn't happen to have a picture of that blanking plug, would you? I can't see it at all from below, and can't feel it from above.

Steel can be silver brazed with a simple LPG torch if you use a low temp rod such as SBA245. This is a rod with 45% silver content. A suitable flux is needed. This will produce a very strong joint if the parts are close fitting. If you do this then drill the plug so the pipe is a neat fit. I would avoid butt joints if doing this as the pipe could break away.

Now that Mark's come to the rescue with a plug/bolt, I can use the preferred brass method. That's the plan with the pipe. I'd never trust a butt joint where any vibration or movement is concerned. It'll be copper pipe, through the whole depth of the plug, with solder sweated into it and seamed around the top.

ok matt i can screw cut the thread on the lathe.so its no prob.i wont be able to do the hex head so i intend on machining two flats on the top of the plug is this ok,do you need a hole put through the middle if so what diammeter?do you want a shoulder put on the plug?tell you what ill put up a drawing and just tell me if its right or not or if you want anything changed.

With regards to the two flats on the head, that will be fine. If you could sort the hole through the middle, that'd be lovely. My use of the pillar drill is legendary, and not in a good way. I'll get the diameter off the pipe. I think it's around 5/16 off hand, roughly the size used on brake lines, but I'll double check. With regards to the shoulder, I've no idea. I hope Nev may have the answer to that one. I've never actually seen this plug yet. If it wasn't for Nev's advice and help on this project, I'd have been screwed before I even started.

hi matt,have machined the plugs/bolts.just need the hole in the middle info and the shoulder info.do you want a recess /groove machined into the underside of the shoulder for an "o" ring.oh and it was two you wanted wasnt it.?

I'm beginning to think you have a time machine. It's like Blue Peter, 'and here's one I prepared earlier'. Two would be nice, provided that's no problem for you, of course. I just like to make sure I have a backup in case of emergencies. I'll pop out and grab that pipe. With regards to the shoulder bit, I'll defer to Nev's judgement on that one. Due to not actually having seen the original, I'd hate to just hazard a guess on that bit.

i can do the silly little thing at work,without getting caught and if i do,im machining something for a customers boat,rock sliders and bull bars i cant really get away with,i mean how many boats do you know that use bull bars.?
as to the shoulder from what i can see in the pic of the filter housing you put up.it looks like you have plenty of room for the shoulder,it wouldnt be any bigger than the hex of a bolt.

And to cater for the 3rd genner's, that seamen to your lot. Just got those measurements. The OD of the pipe is 3/16" or 4.76mm, whichever's your favourite unit.

ok so a 5mm hole will suffice that way you can get the silver solder to flow through it,unless of course you want me to do that as well,ive got some 3/16" bundy here,its no prob.up to you
