OK, after a lot of struggle, I've finally managed to get my hands on a second hand front diff for my 3ltr. Before I remove the old diff from the car, I thought I'd best check the new one out, so I cracked it open. Looks good inside, but I have a feeling that it's the wrong ratio.
OK, not up to the technical details of the names of the bits, but...
Big gear (Ring?) has 43 teeth,
Medium sized gears (??) have 16 teeth
Small gears (Pinion?) have 10 teeth
Input gear (??) has 10 teeth
To me that makes it a 4.3:1 drive. Which is a b*gg*er as the one on at the moment is a 4.1:1 (according to the Axle code G294 anyway). Axle code also appears to suggest I have a 4 pinion diff, and this one appears to be a 2 pinion diff.
So, I guess this diff is no good for me?
Of course, I haven't 100% confirmed what is broken on the old diff, I just snapped this one up as it was available.
