  • tyre size - best on road / off road compromise?

    Hi there,

With a 3.0 2nd generation Surf what do you think is the best tyre size for both on road and off road use? Split will be about 80% on road and 20% off road.

33" tyres with a 2" suspension lift and 2" body lift sounds great in theory but I'm concerned about on road handling and performance (and stability). In practice a 2" suspension lift and 31" tyres maybe a better bet. What do you think?

    All the best.

    Martin.

I know this is the wrong answer, but I would have thought 31x10.5x15 with no lift would be adequate for now.

        get it up

get it up in the air and and get a set of mudzillas they make them for 15 inch
rims now i am just about to do a 2 inch body lift the landcruser sprigs on the back with procon 9000 shocks back & front and am fitting front diff drop spacers
so the front drive shafts are not running at such a steep angel that way you do not go thou cv boots and cv jonts and at the bad end f****D up front diffs i am removing the front & back antie roll bars so that the axles have max travel
when off road there are a lot of owners that have removed the antie roll bars
and there surfs pass there mots if the bars are not on then the mot tester
cant not test some thing that is not on your surf what you have to do when your surf has had the bars removed is not to dive it like a sports car it is almost
3ton car that you are driving you have to think long and hard before you start
these mods as i have but i got my surf to have off road fun with but you will
have to make up your mind what way u want to go with your mods i have had my 2.4 j reg ssrg for just over a year now but from day one the lifted surf is the way that I want it best of luck with the way that you choose to do it

          NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!

Do NOT put Mudzillas on if 80% of your time is gonna be spent on tarmac and motorways! They are noisy and vague.

They look great, and are the dogs off road and in mud, but they will ruin your handling and fuel consumption.

Jeff, grease my palms with enough money to buy 33" BFG AT's and you can have mine!

<edit> Jeff, forget it, Vicki just said "Why dont you buy a set of BFG ATs on wheels, and keep the Muds for wet winter outings?" While she's feeling generous I will take advantage and keep both sets!

It's hard to beat BFG A/Ts they are a great all rounder that last and last.

            You don't need a lift for 31x10.5x15

True. I have 265/75-16s on when it was standard. They work out just under 32"

I think the best size for 80% road use is 31/10.5/15 in an AT pattern. It`s not worth wearing muds for occasional off-roading unless you just like the image. I`m sticking to the "conservative" 31/10.5/15 as my truck`s an all-rounder and I`m happy matching that to the 1.5" susp. lift and 1.5" bodylift. If economy is your motive then you can still have fun off-road and greenlaning with the smaller 30/9.5/15 or 265/70/15 (only if you have no lift).
                  cheers,

I run 31" x 10.5 x 15 mud tyres and they're fine on the road, but I do hear a little whine ( even when I'm alone) but they're fine really

Bfg a/t's or general grabbers both are very durable on road and will give some reasonable off road performance only get M/T's if you plan alot of off roading in muddy terrain.......Oh and 31/10.5/15 is correct

I went from standard alloys and road tyres to BFG 31 x 10.5 x 15's AT's on different rims (no size on rim that I can see) with no loss of performance or any great difference in road noise, fuel economy was exactly the same, or so negligable as couldn't tell.
