              Oh no it isn't!

You might be quite shocked to learn that just because a cheque 'clears' it doesn't mean that the cash is yours. A bank can reverse the transaction if they need to.

It can take some foreign banks (usually West African) up to six weeks to return unpaid cheques or drafts but if you ring your bank they will tell you that the money is cleared and it will show on your statement as cleared funds. However when the cheque or draft is returned the bank will debit your account for the full amount.

I usually insist on cash, or a direct bank transfer.

They tried this on with a friend of our family that buys and repairs BMW's, they sent a cheque to cover the cost of the car plus extra to cover the cost of shipping to Belgium I think it was. Of course the plan was that the cheque would show up in his account the next day and he would draw the cash or pay by card to cover the shipping, so, when the cheque bounces 4 days later he's out of one car plus the shipping costs! despicable!
