To O/D or not to O/D ?

Help me out here guys and girls. I have been told its better to drive with the Over drive on as its better fuel?. Then told its better to have it off ? Now in lost ? what is the right thing to do for town and motorway driving ?

Leave it on and forget about it, unless towing heavy trailers up hills.

My overdrive's always on... May turn it off when going up a long, steep hill, but turn it on again at the top..
