  • Helicopter pad

I know there are one or two on here who are into flying so I thought I would just chuck a question in.
About 50yds away from my house, which is in a normal housing estate,
there has just appeared a helicopter landing pad, I only noticed it when I was looking at the Live Earth site that I linked too yesterday.
Question is can anybody just set up a landing pad and start using a helicopter so close to housing?
I've yet to see any landing or taking off but as the guy is loaded I don't suppose he's just done it as a status symbol.
Laugh!!! I nearly bought my own beer.

Planning permission is needed although if his land is big enough ,E.G. a big field a limited amount of landings is permitted, without any proper fire cover

I think you will have a few more pads in your area after they dig up the old Sheffield airport (did you see it on look north last night ?) Dragon Air and the people from Mexborough have made applications for limited movements pads all round north sheffield and that is a real mixture of Bell Jet Rangers and Hughes and stuff and they are all busy flying over to us near Finningley so it looks like your neighbour could be part of the new commute club !

they used to have one on the farm up my lane... not really a problem as it flew over low, landed and shut off straight away... once it was behind the farm buildings you couldn't really hear it.

once it nearly blew me off my bike on the way to school though!

Looks like you might be right John, but I've checked for planning permission and can't find any, so as I walk my dogs within 30yds of the H every day (never saw it because the footpath is below field level) if they get spooked I'll be lodging an objection.
I for one will be sorry to see Sheffield A/P go as I have spent many a happy hour working there repairing the runway lights and general electrical works, but it's been on the cards for years.

I know what you mean Paul ,when I worked at Homeworld at Catcliffe we used to stand in the loading bay dreaming of flying to Holland ! I think they have given in to the housing demand people far too easily ! Does that mean all the based planes will go to Netherthorpe or Gamston ?
But more importantly does that mean your job is on the line ?

Nah that job was for a subby firm from Mexbro, that went about 2 years ago when IMI took over at Polypipe where most of our work was.
Yes Gamston looks like the likely recipient and while we were working there they were rapidly expanding while Sheffield were going down the drain.
They actually built an office block at SAP about 3 years ago which blocked the air traffic controllers view of the end of the runway, how's that for forward thinking?

Those in the background of my truck are as about as interesting as they get.
