Anyone know about racked IT hardware stuff?

Does anyone here know stuff about hardware server racking type stuff?

If so I have a question.

For a customer we are about to deploy a load of servers in an additional 19" rack. Part of this will be an 8-port KVM. Unfortunately the KVM has a standard UK 3-pin plug/dc adaptor, but the rack has IEC "kettle lead" ports like these:


Is there some adaptor/cable we can get to allow us to use the KVM in the rack? If so whats it called and where can I get one? Tried searching maplin/RS but not found anything yet.

Before you ask, yes we could get a "proper" KVM which has IEC power input but we already have two racks in place with the same KVM and we want to daisy-chain them so need to be same make/model.

And, before you ask how the current KVM is powered - I don't know without going to the machine room (5 hours drive).

KVM = Keyboard Video Mouse. Try Electrician supplies type outlets.
You need a 3 pin male kettle type plug.

Depends exactly what type of socket he's referring to. Sounds like he has a 12V type psu for the KVM. If you mean you have a step down transformer to power the KVM, with a standard three pin mains plug on the end, whip the mains plug off and get a I.E.C plug for the end of the mains lead.

So, can't (and prob wouldn't want to) cut/re-wire anything.

Need something with UK 3-pin mains socket on one end and a standard male IEC "kettle" lead on the other.

If it's got one of the wall bricks, get an inline type psu instead, with a higher output current rating. The wall psu's always seem to be rated as close as humanly possible to the load. Oversize, and you can use the same type of mains lead as you do for the UPS to server power, and if you over-rate the psu by an amp or two, it will be far more reliable. (Not as prone to electrolytics drying out or overheating). i.e:

You can get them far cheaper than that one above, but it was just as a general idea.

Maplin do the end that you need & as you say you just then need a single socket outlet Maplin. Then don't forget to have it PAT tested

Are you sure it is powered from a transformer I thought this model had an IEC into the back of it. I can check later as we're going in tonight at 23:00 to do some OOH's work.

Easy. Just get a normal 4-way extension lead, take the 3-pin plug off, and wire on one of those male IEC plugs as in the 3rd pic on your other post. Then just plug that into the racks power bars, and the ac adaptor into the 4-way extension. That's what I do.
