Hi everyone been a member since aug 2006 and have read with interest all reports on the fragility of the 2.4.thought i would share my experience with you.Myself i served my time as a diesel mechanic at Massey Ferguson Coventry. When i had finished i decided it wasn't for me and went back to college and into the building industry.Sep last year going to Banbury from Coventry in my badly maintained Surf 2.4 with two and half ton in my trailer my rad blew.smoke everywhere looked like i was sending sos in smoke signals.I was fully aware of the consequences but had no choice but to carry on to the job because i was in the middle of Banbury.I ordered a new rad went down and fitted it and headed back to Cov with about same weight in my trailer. All the way back she was verging on overheating in and out of red but she never missed a beat.Got in touch with Autojap centre booked her in and Gaz stripped her head off and replaced it.Ouch that cost really hurt.Ever since run superb and the experience has made me pro-active with my maintainance.(conclusion.)what a motor; name me another 4x4 that could do what the Toyota can. fragile rubbish; Awsome definately.

My opinions on the Surf motors, seeing as I was thinking about at this momnet, and your talking engines....
1984-1987
2.0 Petrol - Great reliability, good MPG, a little gutless on the motorway.
2.4TD - Good reliable motor once the head is sorted, does the job.
1989-1995
2.4TD (EFI after 90/91) - Good reliable motor once the head is sorted, does the job fine, but if you drive other Surf you'll notice the difference to the 3.0
2.8 non-turbo diesel - not seen one yet
3.0TD - Perfect motor for the Surf in the UK, ideal mix of economy and power.
3.0 V6 - Smooth and sexy sounding, similar power to the 3.0TD, but MPG slightly lower than the 2.5TD
1996-2001
2.7 I4 Petrol - not seen one yet.
3.0TD Intercooled - Ultimate evolution of the 3.0TD motor.
3.4 V6 - Big improvment on the old 3.0 V6, much like the deisel 3.0 vs 2.4, more power and better MPG than the 3.0 V6.
3.4 V6 Supercharged - Ultimate V6 in a Surf/4Runner
2001-on
I have no experiance of the new motors in the newest trucks.
