Arrrgghhh -rusty shocks!!

Noticed this morning the rods on my newly installed ES9000's have started to rust!
Is this normal??
anybody else got rust on theirs?
won't the rust damage the seals when shocker retracts?

Yep, I fitted some to my old 2.4 and they started to rust in matter of mounths - I think the paint coating on them is pretty cr@p

The white paint is only Powder Coated so its advisable to paint them as TONYN has previously mentioned

The painted body is OK - it's the shiny silver metal rod that slides in and out bit thats rusting. been on for 2-3 months!!!.
I'm just worried the rusty bit will cause damage to the seals when it goes inside body during bump driving - and ultimately fcuking the shock!!

The rods are generally OK, do you have boots on them? Only ones I've got that are going rusty on the rods havn't been used in 3 years and don't have boots!

If the boots are sealed it holds moisture in, make sure the drain holes are free.

Normally you'll not get any rust on the bit of rod that slides in and out, even on a $$$$py shock thats used regularly.

Ironically I did not bother with the boots as I thought they would trap moisture and accelarate rusting!!!

I think its cause they don't have any boot on, and the rod that high up never gets rubbed.

I'd go nuts over a few speed humps to clean them, then fit a set of gaiters.

Clean then up as best you can using WD40 then smear some thick grease on the tops or fit gaiters.

I fitted the genuine shocks to mine when one of the rears went. No problem here, as the whole thing is covered.

roughtracks told me that failure to fit boots could void warrentee due to rust, so I paid the extra for the boots, nice yellow ones.( like christopher robin)
