Mine was using water too. Sadly not enough to notice any change in the Rad or Bottle on the 1hr test drive. No white steam from exhaust. So I bought it. So cheap though! Hmmmmm.
Next day white smoke and water loss. Still no overheat despite the steam bellowing. Seems a cracked head often shows no overheating at least on the 1KZ 3.0. I then ran it for 1 journey with clouds of steam to its resting place for a week!
I have now just rebuild the top end - Big thanks to Stevo of The Engine Co. Stockport.
Missed a few times as it chuffed away on the first start up but nothing much than air out the fuel lines. Now runs bang on temp at 82deg whilst driving and cools quickly on idle - using my little digital multimeter. The Toyota guage just doesn't move so I will be fitting a permanent digital guage sited almost heads up to warm me of any near engine failure!!
As someone said they must get fawkin hot to crack.
Sadly turbo is making a bad sound on windup and any acceleration. Goes away when warmed up and not all that bad but I suspect that the coolant has done it in. Never made the noise on the 1 and only day I ran it before the crack showed up.
They are great vehicles though - I am discovering at last.
Good luck with the rebuild.Last edited by toyotav84x4; 4 January 2007, 21:43.Smack it with a 16lb Hammer and it will come off!
