Often just being an odd jobber who is able to turn there hand to most household tasks will always be in demand.

We are planing to move to Suffolk/Norfolk area and there does not seem to be any Insurance Engineer work in that area . I did think of being an 'odd job man' but Tam did not think I could make a living doing it , thats why I thought of a single trade .
I have never had much confidence to go alone , I did work self employed for just 1 year along time ago but I did work for just 1 company and they stopped using me with 2 hours notice .

No matter how confident you are about going it alone, it's a risk, whether
you're confident or not, so you haven't really too much to lose trying. At
the end of the day, your best option would be to try it now and see. Old
folks bungalows, for example. They usually have a multitude of small repairs
they need doing, and are all within a very confined area, so make one of
them happy, and the rest will soon know. Even just putting one day aside
which you can spare at the moment whilst you still have your main job would
give you a general idea of how things might go.

trained to be a tiler went to college got all the paperwork nvq 1 / 2 ended up driving a lorry hehe , if you can start doing building work whilst doing your other work you will see if it picks up to be able to change your career good luck

Hello mate, in answer to your question there are 3 ex plumbers where I work now and that includes me! There are many reasons why and I think somebody has already said about the cheap labour and the fact most plumbing is do-able. Though it is highly over sold to say the least!
Its only gas heating that is regulated( for obvious reasons) and thats only corgi (Certificate Of Registered Gas Installers) and thats done by the gas board and is overated and only really asked for by the Insurance Industry.
It also depends on where you are as some areas are desperate while others are awash with them.
I'd go for the choice of sparky if I were you but that is regulated heavily and even cheap labour has to take the tests for that when they wish to work here but the training is long and the tests are expensive also there is the question of supply and demand in your area.

Been a CORGI installer for 20 yrs, not gonna get drawn into a debate but CORGI is independant as the registered installers fund it not B/Gas.

My main issue with the Corgi registration is the exams were Open book (dont know these days) and you could retake if you failed so the paper is worth fork all, just another rip-off for paying to be a plumber or heating/ventilation engineer.

There are many valid points raised here, and in 20 yars I've never made a fortune but always had work.
I try to do a good job for reasonable money, and 95% of my work is recomendation.

You can tell a professional job from a diy one just by looking at it.
At the end of the day all trades go up and down in popularity, and plumbing is this decades double glazing, there will always be cowboys in any trade and there are always people looking for greener grass, and always people who think theres a fast buck to be made for little effort.Plumbing and heating is hard work, I bet I make a lot less money than the bloke who sold me my van!!

Like any trade you are paying for the expierience of the individual and as was mentioned before CORGI ain't cheap, nor is the van, tools, training, insurance, fuel, and believe me there are as many rogue customers as there are traders! NUFF SAID!

Yup, they let almost any d1ckhead in these days as long as they can pay who cares about gas safety, certainly not CORGI>

Hey Rick, there's plenty of building going on in East Anglia, As you have been an insurance assesor and are V.Handy, maybe you could be a site manager or foreman. There are many growing small building companies here too!

Cheers Martin , I did see the building sites in the area when we were looking at houses last month .
I dont want to be a millionare , just earn a living doing something different and not working for a-holes like Insurance Co.s .
I hoped to 'multi-trade' inc a little bit of car servicing . I did speek to Jon about even upgrading my welding kit so I could do welding etc .
Years ago I thought of the flat pack assembley job , I thought about it to long and now someone else has done it . He advetises by Ikea and MFI and gets those jobs that people make a mess of and charges for re-assembling the mess the people make of putting the flat packs together .

The whole idea of moving from Harrow is to get away from the a-holes that are now coming here in there droves . Parking, driving and all the other stuff too .
A new house and new jobs , found the houses , not the jobs .
1 of us needs a job before we can move , it should be me , but it looks doughtful .
