I can't weld for toffee, so I'd try to find some other way first. No idea, yet.
I always brainstorm as I do a job, so I usually only have a vague idea initially.
The job usually dictates the method as it progresses. I never was any good at
pre-planning.
I'm the same, thats why i have to do the job twice, at least with alloy it's easy to drill etc, been thinking or robbing asda's car park or city bus's bus stops, some nice s/steel tubeing there, but i cant weld it and it's hard to drill
And nobody could say Surfenstein didn't end up on the right side of perfection. It's usually better 'cos you don't end up with the specific mindset of it having to be done in a certain way. It makes it a lot easier for working around unexpected problems, doesn't it? The purist planners hate it though.
i just had a vision in me head of what i wanted it to look like, and i spose i am a bit of a perfectionist.

I've always preferred aly if possible as well. No rust to worry about, nice and
light, but quite tough. Also, easy to work with, as you say. I think I'm going
to have to whip the bumper off and have a sit and think whilst I stare at what
there is to work with. (Which should be fun in this weather). It'll probably
be a mixture of aluminium, brass, copper and steel for the brackets, if my usual
tack is anything to go by.

And no-one could ever disagree with that. She really does look beautiful. That
was most definitely time and effort well spent and well done. I think that's
where the two schools of thought differ, isn't it. The people who pre-plan have
to see it on paper to visualise, whereas we get to see it all in our heads, and
make the alterations in there as well, as we progress. Being on the shady side
of sanity can have it's perks.
