Yep. Hybrids ain't what they're cracked-up to be a lot of the time.
It all depends on what driving you do. If it's mainly open road or motorway, then you're simply lugging around a lot of extra weight.
If you mainly drive in towns, then hybrids are worth it. Your engine would normally spend a lot of its time running unnecessarily, or at an inefficient speed/load. The hybrid changes that by using the engine only to charge the batteries / power the motors when necessary, and when it does this it runs the engine as efficiently as possible.
Two questions:
1. Where are the diesel hybrids?
2. When are we bringing back free-wheels?
The free-wheel is a terrific device, found on bicycles, old Rovers and old Saabs. It means that your engine doesn't have to work unless you're accelerating so as soon as you ease off the throttle the engine is disconnected from the drivetrain. Note: NO engine braking, so your car can run for a while before you need to "top-up" the speed again using the throttle Brilliant! 70 mph @ 600 rpm
Probably banned by health and safety now
