  • To flush or not to flush

Flushing oil seems to polarise peoples opinions. Some wouldn't touch it with a bargepole and reckon it does more harm than good, others reckon it should be done at every oil change! What do you reckon?

I was always advised to stay clear of flushing oil but if you want to flush do it with ordinary oil for about 20 mins.

My mate had a diesel engined escort van flushed and two weeks later siezed the engine. He swore blind it was down to the flush thinning the new oil, i think he forgot to put the new oil in.

unclog your arteries... a good flush is the way forward. i use a very thin 12 grade machine oil in mine and then flush that out with engine oil. does help when its free though

Iv'e flushed my Defenders engine every 3000 miles since I've owned it (9 years) and it runs in tip top condition. I also flush my Surf too.

As long as you dont exceed the stated flushing time your going to be ok..

That's the key to good flushing apparently. If it always was flushed, it's no
problem. Apparently, the aggressive engine flushes can cause most problems
on an engine that's never been flushed due to the amount of crud it may
loosen in one go. A regularly flushed engine will never have enough buildup for
that to happen. (Guess who's been reading cartloads of oil related info again).

BTW, Andy, thanks for mentioning those Series filters. Picked one up today.
Perfect size and easily modifyable. The dogs nads for the purpose. Cheers.

Frequent, regular oil changes. That's my philosophy,,
                  It just does, OK?

Drop the old oil fill with engine oil (cheapo stuff) run for 20mins drop oil change filter fill up with regular oil. Just picks up any loose crud and old oil.

Having in the past taken an engine to bits and completely cleaned and rebuilt it (Hillman Imp) I was amazed at quite how dirty the internals were on an engine that had regular oil changes.

The Surf gets regular changes but the new oil still looks black after about 20 mins running, so I reckon mine needs a good flush to get all the $$$$ out.

                              It's very close, within 3%!

                              Ooooh I just dont know!

Re. leaving the car draining overnight, I think I'm too stoopid. I'd go out 7:30 half asleep jump in and drive off!
