8 ton on a snatch strap is not a lot, could easily be exceeded.

I read somewhere yesterday an example of the loads in a snatch recovery and they reckoned it was somewhere in the region of 40 ton for a bogged 2 ton truck being pulled out by another 2 ton truck at 10 mph or something stupid, i reckon that example was a bit ott but i can see the theory behind it.
I'll find a link when i find it again.

I think the use of a KERR is something best viewed from a considerable distance, preferably while standing behind something solid

Nah, seriously i got a 15 ton kerr, from a lifting tackle manufacturer. But most use a 12. They're not pretty when they do break.
