Hello one and all. Great site with loads of info for a virgin like me. To surfs I mean by the way. Im off to buy my first surf in the morning and was wanting some pointers on what I sould be looking for ? The car is 1992 "J" reg 75,000mls not bad tax and MOT. The guy selling it is a friend of my Brothers and is moving overseas for 2 years with his job so im buying more to help him out. The car is clean and tidy from what I remember as not been in it for a while and the only problem he has told me about is that some times it needs the glow plugs heated twice and there is some smoke on start up but dies off in an min or so. From what I read this is normal ?
What else do i need to be on the look out for?
I know the guy but at the same bit I dont want to be left with a lemon ?

Hello and welcome Mark, you dont say if its a 2.4 or 3lt, (unless i missed it)
Check it out as you would any car plus check the 4 wheel drive (but not on solid ground, tarmac etc) works OK, and to be on the safe side flush the coolant and do the belts etc, a good dose of redex will help (or a lt of ATF in a full tank)

No m8 its down south but the Guy will be at Berwick on tweed so im going armed with cash. Its the brothers m8 from his army days and its a 2.4TD . Handy to know your just a western ferry ride away m8. Im over that way alot to use my caravan at Kames .

ATF ? As in the stuff for the Gear box ? $$$$$$ hell you learn new stuff every day hahahah. I take it you mean a full tank of fuel ?

Don't worry. It's not a tartan paint job. Seriously, the ATF is an aggressive
cleaner. Can't remember exactly whom posted the info originally, but it's the
method some of the Volvo bunch use. (That's where we nicked the idea from).

That both seals are Ok, and the spring is firm enough. Basically, its hard to tell, just buy a new one and be done with it. they are only £6 or so.
