      Hi mate

Well it all depends on budget, and if you want to carry around something largeish or something that will slip into a pocket when your on your hols.

Anyhow.. DV or mini DV is a must, ensure the camera has a firewire port that both sucks and blows, thats pictures in and out via this port. ( This lets you connect it to a computer should you feel the need to create your masterpiece at some point.
Zoom... optical is best ( they usually all have a digital zoom).

Apart from that whatever catches your eye / wallet

techy stuff... UK spec.. CCIR601 PAL

All the domestic stuff is pretty good and reliable, when you spend more Sony seems to have the edge, good products that don't fall apart.
Oh and one more thing, buy one brand of tape and stick to it (I use Sony) different tape makes are coated with diff lube and when these mix (minute amounts in your camera they react forming a gunge causing head cloggs .. dropout etc)

      good luck
