  • Gear-box Problems

3 times now my gear-box has refused to change up, deciding to stay in 1st gear only, fluid levels are OK. Any ideas on this one chaps?

Don't know a lot about ATX but the first thing that springs to mind, being an electronics type, is that the ECT might be keeping it in gear too long. I'm assuming that whatever condition the ECT provides to the gearbox is fed over a relay and the relay might be sticky.
    It's only a hobby!

i know some on here have changed the autobox oil, just found this on a site....

As an import I thought I'd change all of the fluids inc . the auto trans fluid. However, having purchased the filter and gasket I now find that all the auto specialist I've contacted say "Don't do it!". They say that the damage that can be caused to the seals etc when doing a fluid change isn't worth risking and that I should just keep it topped up.

              vacuum

              Hi

Some of the older Borg-Warner boxes used to use vacuum to change gear. Are there any hoses that have come adrift?

                gear-box problems

                Hi,
I hope this will help. I got this info from one of the threads in this forum. It's a zip file of the US Toyota service manual. There are 2 sections which deals with A/T and may be useful.

                http://www.grubinski.com/grubinski/manuals.html

I downloaded the whole zip file and the Auto Trans section might give you a clue regarding your problem.

Had a Ford Granada that did the same thing. That was due to the electronic speedo sender going kaput. As soon as the mph stopped reading the auto box stuck in second gear as the information was also sent to the electronics controling the auto box. Check to see if anything similar may be happening to the Surf.

                      Hi John

You could also try these two sites. The first one is for the "95 US 4Runner with a 22R-E engine (I think that's the 2.4 liter petrol). I downloaded the files one at a time. The chapter that deals with the Auto Trans has a troubleshooting guide and may be helpful. It didn't download properly on the first attempt though and I had to do it a couple of times.

                      http://www.net-impress.com/4runner/cd/

The second one deals specifically with the 1KZ-TE engine. After looking at your profile, I believe that this is the engine of your SURF. I haven't read this one though so I don't know much about what is in it.

Always glad to be of help mate. I'm new to this forum too and the guys are just great. I'm just happy to be able to return the favor.
