I've been desperately been looking for a workshop manual for a 3rd Gen Surf (96).

Most of the information I've stumbled upon appears to relate to earlier models.

You will find a manual for the engine on this site http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/info/ ,but a complete workshop manual is not available.

You can get a Haynes manual for the 3rd gen 4Runner from Amazon
It doesn't cover the diesel engine but you can get the manual for that on the links Andy & Nev posted above.
There's also a Chiltern manual available but it's not as good and the Haynes one, even though it's published by Haynes as well.
